Reviews for Warrior Heart:
** "Enjoyable first volume of a science fiction series with three major races; humans, Vesars, a powerful warrior race, and a scary and nasty race of insect beings, Orthops. brrrr! Orthops want to spread to other planets. Orthops will kill or eat humans or cocoon them for their eggs. Personalities develop as the story moves along, some for the better and others not so much. Loved the story and the characters, and am awaiting Volume 2 with baited breath. This is the sort of story I will go back and read again and again. Oh, I love the Time Travel and the Kin companions." Emily Cummins, 6/14/16.
** "This science fiction fantasy is truly a page turner. I couldn't put it down. The comradery between the characters is explosive, witty and compelling. I love the kinpanions in the story as well. And if you don't know what a kinpanion is, you definitely need to find out by reading this story written by up and coming author, Laura J. Kaighn. I can't wait until the next book in the series is published." Hope Bitner, 6/3/16.
** "The only redeeming element to the book was the imaginative storyline. The world building was well done too. I found the primary characters to be interesting but their interactions stilted at times. I did find the concept of Kinpanions to be another creative element to the story, as was the time travel premise." BFL Groupie, 4/11/16.
** "A thoroughly entertaining sci fi read complete with time travel, insect aliens and galactic romance. A good choice for the sci fi reader!" ncdemme, 8/19/16.
** "A must read! A story with a strong plot and strong conflict (the Galactic Alliance must be saved) cannot survive without strong and vibrant characters. Warrior Heart supplies all three! Key characters, Dorinda, a school teacher from 1999, and Vesarius, a warrior from another universe, meet. Theirs is a love story - tender, turbulent, but supportive always. Interwoven is a cast of humans and nonhumans, the Orthops among them, whose actions supply tense and sometimes terrifying moments. Kaighn honors and appreciates the environment and the animals and plants that populate it. This is apparent but not intrusive. "Kin Companions" from the animal world, Noah, the otter who bonds with Dorinda and Tundra, an Alaskan Malamute, Vesarius' Kin Companion, will surely make connections with animal lovers. Kaighn is a stellar storyteller, especially of traditional tales. Her imagined "Creation Story" from Vesarius' heritage is beauty, thought, and reverence personified. What will happen to these characters (or people) Kaighn has created? Find out in a companion volume, Warrior Spirit. I'm sure it will be interesting, mind-stretching, and entertaining. Neither Kaighn nor her characters could ever be dull - be assured of that!" Gwendolyn Jones, Prof. Emeritus, TCNJ, 9/4/16.
** "Well written. I love the action packed story. It is rich with details and the imagery is vivid. I can SEE the story. I thought you made good choices with your vocabulary. Loved the first line where you say, "bathed in scarlet." Jackie Huster, Middle School Librarian, Vineland Public Schools, 2/17/16.
** "Time travel, romance and aliens. What more could you want from a good Sci Fi book? Warrior Heart is quite a treasure to behold. We not only have time travel but, also space travel complete with aliens and romance. The characters are deep and your heart yearns for their complex world views to merge into understanding. With twists and turns in directions you might not expect, this book keeps you guessing, and loving every second of the ride. I can't wait to read the next one, and you must read this one." Lindentree, 9/16/16.
*Warrior Spirit: Book Two of the Vesar Warrior Legacy *What if you fell in love with a human woman from a century's past? What if your Vesar government saw that relationship as immoral... even dangerous? What if your greatest urge was to protect her with your very life and honor... to your last breath and heartbeat? Commander Tankawankanyi (Vesarius) has been assigned by the Galactic Alliance as liaison to the Orthop peace negotiations. The renegade warrior's first challenge, however, is dealing with an equally irascible team of diplomats in order to accomplish his mission. One of the Alliance delegates is the very individual who cast the condemning vote on Vesarius' nearly decade-long exile. Tensions escalate when Vesarius' recently restored honor is questioned and suspicions arise of his human companions. Even as she trains to be the Pompeii's new SAR officer, Dorinda Jade must act to ease these conflicts all the while hiding her own past history, a burgeoning PSY talent, and her close relationship with the ship's first officer: the sole Vesar aboard. Will the star-crossed lovers' adventures converge in a culture clash that could end in disaster? And do the Orthops really want peace? Will they follow their Mytoki ancestors' revised history, or will the giant insects pose an even greater threat with a much darker secret? Who will be in greatest jeopardy: the nearby Alliance colonists in general or the Orthops' new Storyteller in particular? And will Dorinda's happily-ever-after ever come to pass? Reviews for Earth Child: The E.D. Piper Chronicles:
"Laura Kaighn's Earth Child: The E.D. Piper Chronicles is a testimony to her love of nature, her reverence for the earth, and to her knowledge of earth, sea, and animal science. Written in the form of a retrospective diary, the reader follows shape-shifter Ehlora through a series of well-told narratives in readable and at times wonderfully lyrical language. The fantasy components are so organic to the total tale that they become reality to this reader! Kaighn indicates in a Note to the Reader that she compiled this collection of "dream stories" and "stitched" them into the "tapestry" of this, her first novel. This tapestry is a story gem. Ehlora enters your heart. I look forward to sharing Ehlora's compelling story in Earth Child 2: The Awakening, coming to us in 2014". Gwendolyn Jones, Professor Emerita: the College of New Jersey; Founder of The Garden State Storytellers' League.
"Have you ever wanted to BE something else? Perhaps an eagle, a dolphin, or even a jaguar? This is the premise of an excellent and enjoyable read, full of hairbreadth adventures and narrow escapes. It is human nature, both at its best and worst. There are no dull moments here. You need to read it to get the whole story." Emily E. Cummins, Retired Librarian and Resident Storyteller, Gloucester County Library Systems.
"Most imaginative story! A uniquely written tale using diary entries appealing to young girls everywhere. Imagination and creativity taken to another level! Descriptions so powerful you can feel the beauty of nature! So looking forward to the next series." Joan Marie, 7/7/13.
"This book is wonderful! Not only does it give a magnificent tale of a girl learning about herself and the lighter and darker sides of the people she meets, but it gives some great lessons about our mother earth. It's not quite written in chapters, it's very unique in that it's more written in entries. These can be really long or really short and it's amazing how much information can be contained within a shorter entry. The book was particularly interesting in that we slowly learn what's going on in the "now" around all the entries of the "then". The ending is a touch abrupt but, it leaves the reader understanding what is happening "now" and interested in the new developments. I can't wait to read Laura Kaighn’s next book!" Lindentree Blossom.
“What an awesome book! I really felt like I was right there on the adventure with Ehlora! Loved the bits of humor throughout! I was on the edge of my seat from about half way through til the end! Can't wait to read the next one! Well done, Laura!” Hope Bitner, You Name It Arrangements.
"As a spiritual person, I can understand the way the character feels about situations and how she is different. It is a great book, still reading it..." Jeanne Buesser, author He Talks Funny.
"This book is unique and written in the form of entries instead of chapters. This format lends itself well to the story as Ehlora recalls her Earth adventures. The story develops as she grows up with the knowledge she has special powers. Able to shift from her human self to different species, she becomes more aware of the Earth and its role in her life. She seems mature beyond her years because she has Earth knowledge from the animals she transforms into a well as the earth, sky and waters. Beautifully descriptive and spiritual, a delightful read for any age Earth Child. A wonderful adventure and a good read." Madelyn Blevins, Smyth County Humane Society, 7/19/17.

Join shape-shifter, Ehlora Dawn Piper as she discovers the true nature of her destiny. As she lay injured and isolated within her Arizona grotto, Ehlora spots a massive raven. Or is Kyle Hoht just another of Dr. Harvard Kraven's pawns in the geneticist's obsessive quest to create an army of unstoppable super-soldiers? Are there more shape-shifters out there? And will a global 'awakening' salvage a devastated Earth or endanger the one group of humanity that can save it all?
**The third installment of the Earth Child trilogy, Earth Child: The Awakening will be available in 2021.
Praise for Earth Child: Discoveries:
** "I am not a science fiction/fantasy person, but as a writer, I can enjoy 'bathing' in your lush imagery. I continue to be drawn in by your compelling, gifted storytelling. I feel like I've been sitting under a lovely, refreshing waterfall of words. Your descriptions are stunning. You do brave and compelling work." Donna King, Instructor, Atlantic Cape Community College, 3/12/17.
** "The book in general was exquisite, with a good plot and writing techniques implanted throughout the book. The author's ability to fluidly change character perspectives throughout the book was very good, the main plot always being kept in mind no matter who's perspective it was. Along with this, the author successfully implanted different writing styles, occasionally switching from a live experience for the character or a journal writing about recent occurrences, or more importantly, expositories, in which you can hear some more about the past of the characters, such as the many hidden adventures between Ehlora and the brothers. Along with the styles, the author successfully implemented a normal paced plot, never being too slow to bore the reader. This, along with my personal liking for shape shifters, made this book a wonderful sequel to the original book of this series. I would recommend anyone interested in animals in general to read this series, first book and all." A. Herndon, 14 years old, 6/14/17.
"This book continues with journal entries rather than chapters and once again is a welcome format. The adventures with Ehlora and her brother Kyle, who she didn’t know existed. There is a struggle with each other and also within themselves. As they try to help each other and grow their powers, they find themselves on dangerous journeys. They learn more about their family and other possible shape shifters. They are both thrown into circumstances that require they grow in their abilities as shape shifters and their spiritual journey with earth. This sequel is another wonderful adventure and a good read." Madelyn Blevins, Smyth County Humane Society, 7/19/17.

Reviews in praise of Rabbit's Tale & Other Rites of Passage:
** "I bought two copies of Laura's book for my grandchildren. As I know Laura and have attended some of her story-telling events, I skimmed through a copy knowing it would be suitable for the kiddies. Before I knew what was happening, I was knee deep in one of the many delightful stories in her book. And read some more. And some more. Well done, highly recommend for the younger set, but definitely okay for us "adults" who are all really just young at heart. Oh, by the way, the kids loved it, also." John Leone, author Sharklock Bones, 4/7/14.
** "Rabbit Time” is just around the corner! Instead of a real live rabbit, may I suggest you give as a gift Rabbit’s Tale and Other Rites of Passage: Parables for a Modern Age? These stories will delight readers, listeners, and tellers and give a lifetime of enjoyment to both children and adults. The author of these stories is Laura J. Kaighn (Lady Hawke), who has been telling stories, writing stories, and presenting excellent workshops for over 20 years. There are 23 tales in this compilation (16 original and 7 retold or adapted) encompassing Animal Tales and People Tales. In the third section, there is one story – but what a story – “When the Mountains Wept.” As a reader, listener, and teller steeped in traditional and mythic tales, this final story has become one that remains with me. Its powerful message and imagery are, indeed, awesome. Expressive though the words are, it would make a captivating “picture storybook.”
“In addition to the already successful stories, the author has supplied an appendix of short but succinct discussion questions that would serve equally well in a classroom or family setting. The simple line illustrations add to the apparent simplicity of the tales, and the very short but pertinent author’s notes preceding each story give instant shared communication even before the story begins.
“I truly believe that this collection of tales, in addition to satisfying the individual reader, could also become a constant companion in any household of people who love stories and who would like to make stories a part of their shared family “together time.” Gwendolyn Jones, Prof. Emerita, The College of New Jersey; Founder Garden State Storyteller’s League. 4/2/15.
** "Great read for all ages! Laura's short stories are creative and delightful, often with insightful twists at the end. The themes and lessons of the stories are relatable and truly enlightening! I definitely recommend this book for an enjoyable read on your own or shared aloud with a group; it's perfect for group storytelling!" Rachel Helfand, Executive Assistant of Program Development, Spring Hills Assisted Living, 7/22/14.
**Rabbit's Tale & Other Rites of Passage makes a great gift for your young reader and for those young at heart! With its fable-like lessons and discussion questions, this volume is also appropriate for classrooms: 2nd grade and up! Use it as a read-aloud, or give it to a child to read on her own. From there, there's no telling what tales the reader might create, beginning her own set of family tales! Write on, talented youth. This book is for you!
Delightfully illustrated with the author’s own drawings, this anthology of nature tales and original works ties a common thread. Each tale shares a promising message, that of hope and harmony for our future. Laura J. Kaighn, of Lady Hawke Storytelling, has been presenting quality programming since 1995! Read these adventurous tales for pure enjoyment or share them aloud with your family. Reading level is 8 years plus; stories are suitable for family audiences.
**Laura Kaighn would be happy to visit your facility and share her tales with you. Rabbit's Tale books are available for sale and signing, $12 a copy including tax.

*Note: This 1967 British Sci-Fi series was created by Gerry & Sylvia Anderson (best known for The Thunderbirds, UFO and Space: 1999) and featured their unique "supermarionation" techniques of marionette puppets, live action close-ups and detailed action models. For its time, Captain Scarlet & the Mysterons was very sophisticated and intelligent children's fare.
